Lake Koocanusa is one of the most scenic and productive fisheries in the Northwest stretching over 90 miles long with nearly half of it in Canada. Formed by the damming of the Kootenai River, its name comes from the first three letters of Kootenai, Canada, and USA.
Known for its stunning mountain backdrop, this reservoir offers exceptional fishing opportunities throughout much of the year. Whether you’re after rainbow trout or the occasional bull trout, you’ll find the action here unmatched.
The following chart shows when we offer guided trips for each species on Lake Koocanusa — not necessarily the peak bite for each fish. Water levels, temperature changes, and seasonal movements can all influence when fish are most active.

At Lake Koocanusa, we primarily target rainbow trout, with opportunities to catch bull trout at certain times of year. If you’d like to fish for bull trout, you’ll need a Bull Trout Catch Card available from your nearest Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks location. Harvesting bull trout on Koocanusa is not legal, but you may target them for catch and release when properly permitted.
Fishing here can be productive year-round, but the best time for rainbow trout is typically November through April. During the colder months, Joe runs a fully enclosed and heated boat, providing a comfortable experience no matter the weather.
Charters typically depart from the Rexford Bench Boat Ramp just before sunrise and run for approximately 8 hours on the water. Fish cleaning is now included as part of your trip — Joe can clean your catch right on the lake while you’re fishing, ensuring it’s ready to take home at the end of the day.
Selective harvest is an important part of preserving this fishery, and we encourage responsible fishing practices to ensure it stays that way for generations to come.
For multiple-day charters, a $50 discount is offered on each additional day.
Many anglers enjoy booking consecutive days for more fishing time and less prep it’s a great way to make the most of your trip.
All fishing gear is provided when you’re on Joe’s boat, including rods, reels, and tackle.
Please bring your own food and drinks for the day. Alcohol is allowed in moderation.
