About the Species

Northern Pike (Esox lucius) are ambush predators that thrive in cool, clear lakes and reservoirs. Their long, torpedo-shaped bodies and sharp teeth make them perfectly suited for fast, explosive strikes.

In Montana, pike are found throughout large systems like Fort Peck and Nelson, where they feed heavily on perch, suckers, and shiners. Most fish average 24–36 inches, but larger individuals over 40 inches are caught every year. Because of their aggressive nature, they’re a popular target for anglers looking for consistent action and a good fight.

Where We Fish

Fort Peck Reservoir

Fort Peck offers some of the best pike fishing in the state. Its large bays, flooded timber, and shallow flats create an ideal habitat for pike to spawn and feed. Early in the season, they concentrate in shallow coves and along weed lines; by midsummer, they move into deeper water near points and drop-offs.

Our guides know the seasonal patterns and monitor temperature and water levels to locate fish efficiently throughout the year.

Nelson Reservoir

Nelson Reservoir near Malta provides reliable pike fishing in a smaller, more contained setting. It’s a productive fishery where anglers can expect steady action on most days. Shallow, weedy areas and rocky shoreline edges hold good numbers of pike during spring and early summer, with opportunities for larger fish as the season progresses.

Other Northern Montana Lakes

In addition to our primary lakes, we occasionally fish smaller reservoirs and backwater systems that produce quality pike fishing with less pressure. These trips are customized based on conditions and angler preferences.

The Guided Trip

A guided pike trip with Get The Net Outfitters focuses on providing a productive, low-stress day on the water. We supply all rods, reels, tackle, and bait, along with a fully equipped boat and safety gear.

Trips typically run about eight hours and are adjusted for weather and water conditions. Depending on the time of year, we may cast spoons and spinnerbaits in shallow bays, troll larger crankbaits along weed lines, or jig deeper points for suspended fish.

Your guide will assist with techniques, fish handling, and local insights to help you get the most out of the day.

When to Fish

  • Spring (April–June): Pike move into shallow water after ice-out, providing the most consistent and accessible fishing of the year.
  • Summer (July–August): Pike transition to deeper water and ambush bait along drop-offs and weed edges.
  • Fall (September–October): Cooling water temperatures bring fish back to the shallows. This period often produces some of the largest catches of the year.
  • Winter (December–March): Ice fishing opportunities are available on Fort Peck and Nelson for anglers who enjoy fishing through the ice.

Each season offers different conditions and tactics, and our guides plan every trip around what’s producing best at that time.
